Michelson Museum of Art
The Michelson Museum of Art was established in 1985 for the special purpose of accepting and caring for the life work of Russian-American artist Leo Michelson (1887-1978). His career spans two worlds and seventy years, leaving the museum a collection of over 1,000 paintings, drawings and prints.
In 1999 the museum received the art collection of Gloria and Bernard Kronenberg. Dr. Kronenberg, an opthamologist and collector of 20th century American art, has given 15 paintings, drawings and sculpture from artist such as Milton Avery, David Nurliuk, John Edward Costigan, George "Pop" Hart, Carl Holty, George Rousult, Raphael Soyer and Abraham Walkowitz. The Michelson then received the Ramona and Jay Ward Collection of African Masks and Artifacts. Mr. Ward was the creator of the cartoon characters Rocky and Bullwinkle, George of the Jungle and Dudley-Do-Right. The African Tribal Masks represent a wide range of separate but similar cultures of nine different peoples. This collection exhibits the vigorous, sharply defined abstract work of tribal art. The carvers illustrate great personal interpretation as each relates to human and supernatural forces.
